BIRD is the Acronym of Board for Integrated Rural Development; BIRD started its activities from 28 November 2007 with its own resource in the community of a small remote village of Narail district. BIRD, the idea came out from the compatible youthful pin-up to stand against anti-social activities. It is a non-political, non-profit and non-government organization (NGO) steadfast to contribute and promote national development through upgrading the socio-economic condition of the disadvantaged/under-privileged poor communities of the society. Since its inceptions, BIRD is very committed, specific and sincere to bring the socio-economic uplift and established the rights of the women and children of ethnic minority e.g. sweeper, cobbler and fishermen,Solid waste management Narail Municipality. etc.

ORGANIZATION’S OVERVIEW

1. Vision: A democratic, impartial, competent and dearth free Bangladesh. BIRD consider that underprivileged peoples are becoming poor for the reason they are the sufferers of a variety of unfair activities of social and political system.  Their situation can be changed through making them robust for their preferred changes. If they are made fit for their transform, they themselves can change their doom.

2. Mission: A large number of inhabitants in our society have no right of entry to essential foodstuff, health services, education, and basic rights and like other basic essentials. They are poor and underprivileged and the society itself is culpable for their distress. And such situation can be improved if they are making available with mandatory co-operations. In this situation BIRD has designed to cooperate with these poor and underprivileged peoples through implementing projects and programs. Mainly BIRD would like to bring into being self-financed, self-employed and self-empowered communities with capabilities greater than before  by providing need based services and supports like awareness raising,human right, nutrition, health, sanitation, education, agriculture, savings, credit, marketing, gender, environment etc.

3. Approaches : BIRD perform in the course of integrated approaches focusing on resource based rural groups, raising awareness about health, hygiene and sanitation; enhancing capacity level  of the distressed women; raising income level to alleviate poverty; training on technical skills; raising awareness about human rights;  mobilizing community people to act against children and women repressions; training on leadership development; motivate the local people to properly utilize local natural resources and above all, uplift the  social status of the rural poor. This approach is replicated in all planning and policies prepared by BIRD. Approximately all the projects and programs are taken in the selected villages and slums where BIRD has been carrying out its activities following this approaches.

4. Goal: The goal of the organization is to bring positive change of the disadvantaged and underprivileged people (those who are victim of climate change) regarding their respective socio-economic and cultural position.

5. Objectives:

  • – To improve and conservation of environment (Adaptation and mitigation of Climate Change)
  • – To organize the target people into groups to develop their unity and solidarity, collective strength and provide them institutional base skill.
  • – To develop consciousness and awareness among the target people about the social and state systems and their position in the family, society and state.
  • – To develop their self-image, self-confidence and creativity and make them fit for their desired changes.
  • – To alleviate the acute poverty of the poorest group members involving them in income-generating activities, legal aid support, adolescent education, primary education and health education.
  • – To improve the lives of the disabled people especially, the disabled children providing various support and services.
  • – To contribute to ensure human Rights of targeted people and good governance of targeted institution of specific region
  • – To respond to the need of the distressed people caused by natural disaster.
WORKING AREA

BIRD has been working with a view to reducing the vulnerability of Women & Children of poor & underprivileged section of the society. Special first choice given to Farmers, Community people , marginal community, disabled people, Working Children , hazardous labor, Labor of informal sector , Disabled Children  Women, Widow , Divorced and  People under risk  of HIV/AIDS etc.

MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE OF BIRD

General Body comprising a group of highly qualified and experienced professionals and dignitaries of the society. The General Body, consisting of 21 members organizes at least one general meeting annually in a transparent and democratic manner all the way. The General Body approves the activities of the Executive Body. The Executive body elected by the members of the General Body for 3 Years, is comprised of 7 members. It is the supreme authority to frame policies and guidelines to run the organization. The Executive Director, appointed by the Executive Body, plays the role of Secretary of the Executive Body in accordance with the recognized rights and responsibilities of the designation.

The villages and the urban communities are very backward in terms of education, economy and culture etc. The urban communities are the slums of the Jhenidah district town. Working / Intervention Field of BIRD

As a NGO,BIRD is implementing various development programs and projects; most of those are in association with the financial assistance of the development partners and/or Govt. agencies and private sector, while some are independently by its own resources. Main programs of  BIRD:

Development of climate resilient cropping system. BIRD organization has been implementing integrated Solid waste management program in Narail Municipal Council since 2014. Various innovative activities are being conducted. Mini waste treatment plants are being set up to reuse, reduce, recycle and convert waste into resources. For example, diesel, petrol, fuel gas is being produced in a special process from waste polythene and bio-fertilizers are being produced from biodegradable waste, which is protecting the burden of the natural environment by preventing environmental pollution.

PRESENT PROJECT OF BIRD

1. Sanitation, Hygiene Education and Water Supply in Bangladesh –Shewab (Gob/Unicef)

BIRD is implementing the activities in 12 union of lohagara upazila of Narail district; 250000 people will be benefited from the project. The main objectives of this project are to ensure the safe drinking water for all, 100% sanitation and change in the hygiene practice. CAP (Community Action Plan), Video show, Orientation of WATSAN Com., WATSAN fair, FGD and folk song are the remarkable activities of this project.

2. Ensuring Participation in Job Placement of the Abused Young Girl after providing them Vocational Training Project

The main objectives of this project is to make the abused girl self-dependent (100 abused girl) through vocational training and community level advocacy. Under this project 100 abused girl will be provided training on computer, packaging, shoe making, Nakshikatha etc. Besides this 10 workshop will be arranged for the GOB official, UP representative, NGO activist and Journalist.

3. COMMUNITY-BASED NURSERY PROJECT:

To create green world for living being on earth is the goal of the project. Non-formal training on nursery establishing & management and sustainable forestation is the main components of the project. This is an income project of BIRD through 03 nurseries in its working areas.

4. FISHING AND POULTRY REARING PROJECT

BIRD invests some capital with the community involvement every year. Under the project women of BIRD organized groups take care of this project at their home or in the community.  Annually the profit from this project is distributed 55:45 between BIRD and beneficiaries.

5. VILLAGE SANITARY CENTER (VSC)

Production of sanitary items i.e. ring, slab, commode, water seal, pipe is the main works of village sanitary center. These items are sold among the poor villagers at reasonable cost with a view to contributing to government’s initiatives of 100% Sanitation Coverage by 2010. BIRD earns a part of its annual revenue from the profit of VSC.

6. TRAINING CENTER:

BIRD has well-furnished training centers of 04 Rooms’ One Storied Building nearby head office. Capacity building training of different Projects and Capacity Building Support Services-CBSS is given to local NGOs through arranging different training around the year. Several trainings of different projects are arranged at this training center. Moreover, BIRD earns revenue by rent of this center as training venue to local organizations.

WORKING EXPERIENCE OF BIRD IN LAST FIVE YEARS

1. GROUP ORGANIZATION AND WOMEN RIGHT AWARENESS PROGRAM

The targeted women are organized into small group and BIRD reaches to them through development supports and services. BIRD has 550 group consists of 11000 women in its total project areas. Under this project the women are becoming skilled on Reproductive health, child health, family planning and human rights issue, etc. in a weekly meeting and discussion at home yard.

2. DEVELOPING STRATEGIES FOR ENSURING PARTICIPATION OF ABUSED CHILDREN

Coping with the sustainable improvement of the standard-lives for illiterate & endangered Abused Female Children is the overall goal of the project. Child Abuse Reduction, Child Trafficking Protection, Psycho-social Change Reproductive Health Support and Pre-primary Education are the set objectives of the project. This is a 03-years’ project started from 01 January 2005 and ended on 31 December 2007. In the meantime 800 hundred abused female children aged 12-14 and 100 children aged 6+ got benefits from the project.

3. MICRO-CREDIT PROGRAMME FOR DESTITUTE SLUM WOMEN THROUGH ALTERNATIVE IGA

To introduce time-befitting alternative trades and to ensure institution building through “Women Cooperative” is the purpose of the project. Advanced marketing training and “Indoor Trade Fair” of the project has assisted 300 women of 20 slums to enter into the broad market. The women have got loan support on their selected trades and they are earning and contributing to their family expenses.  Significant changes have been noticed in their life leading standard. Mr. Frank W. Bakx, Programme Officer Asia-Rabobank Foundation visited the project both at the field level and office level on 01 March 2006.

4. ENHANCING COOPERATIVE AMONG THE POOR

Formation and development of cooperative for 400 vulnerable poor women is the overall objective of the project. .Standardize the knowledge of 07 project staffs regarding the development of cooperative, Training on book keeping, leadership development training for holding cooperative, collection of individual data to asses the mode of capital formation, development of gradual interaction among 400 women, development of computer-based accounting are the specific objectives of the project. The project started from 1 June 2006 and it will be continued upto 30 November 2007.

5. PREVENTION OF HIV/AIDS FOR SLUM TEENAGERS

For preventing of HIV/AIDS among the 200 teenagers of 10 slums BIRD takes initiative of educating them on fatality of HIV/AIDS and its prevention measures. To arrange community workshop, to facilitate training for the “Community Health Worker”, to publish poster and leaflet, are the ingredients of the project. 10 CHW (Community Health Worker) are trained to conduct community education on the fatality of HIV/AIDS and its prevention measures at school level.

6. ELECTION OBSERVATION AND VOTER EDUCATION

Recently BIRD has signed a contract with RIGHTS Jessore for the above mentioned project as partner organization in Jhenidah and Harinakundu Upazila.  BIRD has started its implementation from October 2006 and it will continue up to the end of Ninth Parliament Election. Confirmatory of voter list, motivate women voters, assist disabled voters, election observation on polling day, keeping observation on post election violence, etc. are the main activities of the project.

7. ANTI-SMOKING MOVEMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOL

To say “No” to smoking is the goal of the project. This is continuing in 20 Secondary School in Jhneidah Sadar Upazila. 3000 Adolescents of 12-15 age are the direct beneficiaries.  Formation anti-smoking team, debate, drama, wall magazine, workshop, rally, etc. are the key activities of the project.

8. PRO-POOR INNOVATION CHALLENGE PROGRAMME:

The street children are neglected but potential of the population portion of Jhenaidah City is the targeted beneficiaries of this project. Under this project, BIRD has been arranging for them income generating means in their environment. For this innovative concept of development an award of US$5000 is given to BIRD by CGAP (The Consultative Group to Assist the Poorest), Washington USA is a Consortium of donors engaged in seeking partnership with innovative MFIs.

9. Aquaculture Development Project (AqDP)

The project has been implemented in 2 southern districts such as Magura and Jhenaidah by BIRD as Lead NGO along with 2 local NGOs of 2 districts as associate partners. The goal of the project is to improve the living condition of the poor people including the poor women of project area. The funding sources of the project are IFAD and WFP through Department of Fisheries.

10. SMALLHOLDER AGRICULTURAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT :

The project has been designed for providing services to the rural poor community for improving services to the rural poor community for improving their livelihood status through introducing poultry model. The model is a package of poultry technology like model breeder rearing, egg hatching, layer rearing and vaccination. IFAD through MOA has financing the project.

11. SUNDARBAN BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION PROJECT:

The project has been designed for conserving the biodiversity of the Sunderban by creating alternative employment for the stakeholders of the Sundarbans. Participation of the members of the local government as well as local elite persons will be ensured to conserve the bio-diversity of sundarban. The stakeholders of the project are fingerling collectors, Mouali and Bauali. ADB through the Department of Forest is financing the project.

12. COMMUNITY BASED REHABILITATION OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITY :

Awareness   rising regarding disability and management of PWDs. The project is being implemented in sadar Upazila of Jhenaidah district with the financial assistance of Action Aid Bangladesh.

13. INTEGRATED APPROACH FOR FOOD SECURITY IN RURAL HOUSEHOLD LEVEL

 Ensuring the food security through integrated approach for the rural people based on rural household. The project was jointly implement by DAE and BIRD for the period of 2000-2001 with the financial assistance of BARC

14. INTEGRATED WOMEN DEVELOPMENT :

The main purpose of the project, assisted by SAP-Bangladesh is to empower the women through ensuring the participation of women in development. The project was implemented in Sadar upazila of Jhenaidah district.

3. Computer Facilities

An up-to-date Computer Centre for BIRD was set up with a view to providing sophisticated technological support the organization needs. The Center has now developed into an excellent computer house with substantial modern hardware and software facilities and above all, skilled professionals who place the organization at the forefront of computer applications in related professional areas. The center is equipped with 5 PCs (IBM Compatible with Pentium-IV processors) and HP Laser, EPSON LQ, and HP DeskJet, Cannon BJ-255 Colour Printers. Besides, LAN has been installed in all the computers for the convenience of work execution and data sharing by the consultants and the system analyst/computer personnel. The organization has an excellent collection of software for database, graphics, project management, accounting, engineering and statistical analysis, word processing and spreadsheet. The Centre maintains a library of computer related books and technical journals which encompass all areas form simple user’s guides to new developments in software and hardware technology. In order to keep the organization’s professionals updated with the latest developments, regular training and orientation programmers are conducted.  The present activities of the Computer Center cover the following areas:

  • Database management – Visual Basic, Visual FoxPro, dBase IV, FoxPro, MS Access etc.
  • Project management and monitoring
  • Statistical analysis – SPSS
  • Other MS-Window and DOS based applications like power-point, Outlook etc
  • Computer, Computer Programmers, Scanner, Printer, Multimedia and Internet
MONITORING AND EVALUATION SYSTEM

During the implementation period of project, BIRD considers the following monitoring and evaluation issues:

  • To monitor that the finance and inputs are/are not being distributed timely
  • To monitor that the activities are/are not being done as per proposed budget line item.
  • To monitor that proposed services of all personnel involved with the respective projects are/are not being effected properly
  • To monitor that the cooperation and faith among the team members are/are not existed.

Central Monitoring:

A central monitoring unit is existed in BIRD  under the directed supervision of the Executive Director. This unit is responsible for monitoring all activities of all programs.  They are accountable of the Executive Director. The outputs of monitoring are shared with the respective division. This unit identifies the divisional   strength, lacking and probable remedies.

Divisional Monitoring:

Each division has a separate monitoring and evaluation unit. This team is patronized by the divisional head. This unit assists to the divisional head in informing the real situation of the field.

Evaluation:

BIRD conducts two types of internal evaluations. These are as follows

  • Midterm evaluation
  • Impact evaluation

Midterm Evaluation:

The midterm evaluation is conducted during the midterm of the project period. This evaluation the rationale of the project. This evaluation indicates the project implementation authority, which type of changes and additions are required to take

Impact Evaluation:

This evaluation is conducted after the completion of the project to asses the impact of the project on the project beneficiaries as well as their community.
